History

History of the College:

Education is a powerful tool that empowers humanity and cultivates a civilized society. It liberates individuals from slavery and superstitions, clearing the path for progress and social transformation. Recognizing the significance of education, The S.V.G.M. Govt. Degree College, Kalyandurg, was established in 1984 under G.O.M.S. No: 509 Edn., (J) Dept. dated 28-11-1984, offering B.A. & B.Com courses with temporary affiliation from Sri Krishnadevaraya University.

In 1997-98, the college introduced B.Sc. Science courses with various combinations including Mathematics, Physics & Chemistry, and Botany, Zoology & Chemistry. Later, in 1998, the college obtained permanent affiliation for B.A. & B.Com courses. The government of Andhra Pradesh sanctioned funds for building construction in 2000, and by June 2004, the college had moved to its new premises.

Over the years, the college expanded its offerings, adding restructured courses like B.Com Computers and B.Sc. Mathematics, Physics & Computer Science in 2004. From its humble beginnings with just 100 students, the college has grown to become one of the prominent institutions in Anantapur District, now catering to 939 students, including those from SC, ST, BC, and female backgrounds.

The college currently offers eight courses, covering various disciplines in Commerce, Arts, and Science streams. Additionally, it runs Postgraduate Courses-M.A. in Political Science, Economics, English, Telugu, and M.Com in Commerce, aiming to provide higher education to the rural students.

Though established in 1984, the college faced infrastructural challenges, with land assignment and construction completed only in 2004, funded by the AP State Government. While receiving funds from the State Government and UGC, the college still struggles to provide sufficient classrooms and modern laboratory facilities for its students.
